Record transfer Pepi: From El Paso to the Lech

Augsburg: “The perfect choice” for the 16-million man

Turbulent days lie behind Ricardo Pepi. FC Augsburg barely presented their transfer coup before the US American was already on the pitch in the Bundesliga. But who is the forward hope who is being courted all over Europe?

When you stand opposite Pepi, you don’t get the impression that he has just turned 19. The Augsburg striker looks mature and carefree. He also presents himself carefree on the pitch. Since last July, he has been the youngest player in MLS to score a hat-trick. At the end of the year, he won the MLS Young Player of the Year award – and he crowned his debut in the national team with a goal and two assists. At FC Augsburg, hopes are high that he will make a similar impact in the Bundesliga. The first 30 Bundesliga minutes have at least been in the books since the duel in Hoffenheim.

The move across the Atlantic is not the first major change of scenery in Pepi’s life. Born in El Paso, he moved to the youth academy of FC Dallas at the age of 13 – over 1,000 kilometres away from his family. A difficult step that Pepi, a family man, describes as a “big sacrifice”. At the same time, it drove him to give something back to his family. His will and his many qualities with the ball at his feet have now fulfilled the first big dream of his career: Football in Europe.
