Field players in goal? Curious Corona Rules at the Africa Cup

Teams at the Africa Cup will have to improvise with many Corona cases in the team. Things could get particularly curious with goalkeepers who have tested positive.

Immediately before the opening match of the Africa Cup between hosts Cameroon and Burkina Faso (5 p.m., LIVE! on kicker), the association once again specified the modalities should there be several positive tests in a selection. Unlike in the Bundesliga, where at least 16 players from the squad must test negative for a match to take place, there are only eleven players in the continental tournament.

However, the match would then not be rescheduled, but would be assessed as a 0:2 defeat for the team concerned. In “exceptional cases”, the Africa Cup organising committee reserves the right to make an appropriate decision, a statement added. Meanwhile, if all goalkeepers in a team are also absent due to a positive Corona test, an outfield player would have to play in goal.
