The capital duel between Atletico and Real Madrid did not find a winner. After Atletico took the lead early on, Suarez & Co. dropped their best opportunities to 2-0 after the break. Real only tightened up late and, after a willing performance by – of course – Benzema still scored the equaliser.
Atletico’s coach Diego Simeone put the goalscorer back on the bench with Joao Felix at the 2-0 in Villarreal, and Carrasco started instead of Saul Niguez. In the storm, 16-goal man Suarez started next to Correa.
Real still had to do without some injuries, including Sergio Ramos and Carvajal. Extremely important for the royals: Benzema returned after his injury and was in the starting eleven – the striker was still to prove his importance for the royals. It was well known in advance that both teams were not distinguished by spectacular football in their playing style – and accordingly calm and controlled things started in Wanda Metropolitano. Atletico got up early and hoped to win the ball deep in the opponent’s half, but Real didn’t let it calm him down. The first quarter of an hour was therefore almost without goal approximation.
Suarez takes an ice-cold lead
Jerome Boateng (32) had not experienced the whistle of the top game against Borussia Dortmund (4:2) on the grass. A first diagnosis followed on Sunday.
It was the 69th minute in the Alliance Arena when Boateng injured himself in a rescue operation. The centre defender could not leave the square without the help of others. “He twisted his knee,” revealed coach Hansi Flick after the final whistle at “Sky,” adding: “We don’t have the exact diagnosis yet.”
This followed on Sunday morning – and the record champion was able to give”a warning”: Boateng”only “pulled a capsule in his left knee 4-2 against BVB. This was the result of an examination by the medical department of FC Bayern.
In the coming days, the central defender will now complete “an individual rehabilitation program”. When Boateng can stand on the pitch about again, the Bundesliga top rider left open.
