Beckenbauer keeps his fingers crossed for Italy – No colourful arena in Munich

EM-Splitter on Friday

Franz Beckenbauer is now an Italy fan, the Munich European Championship arena does not light up colourfully for the quarter-final: The European Championship splinters on Friday.

Beckenbauer sympathises with Italy

After the DFB team’s exit from the European Championship, Franz Beckenbauer (75) is now rooting for Italy. “I’ve sympathised with Italy all my life. I almost played there myself,” the 1974 World Champion told Bild. “In 1966 Inter Milan wanted to get me, a year later AC Milan. But that didn’t work out because at that time the Italian league had imposed a ban on foreigners. So I stayed with FC Bayern.”

Munich Arena not in rainbow colours

The Munich European Championship arena will not be lit up in rainbow colours ahead of this Friday’s quarter-final between Belgium and Italy. This was not planned, UEFA said in response to a dpa request. An application for this has not been submitted. Whether and when the arena will be lit up in colour remains an open question. According to reports, the city and the DFB are still looking into the matter.
